From "Come Into Our Heritge - R.M. of Argyle 1882-1982", pg. 323 Jon Johannesson Breidal was born in 1871 at Flogu in Breidal, Iceland. He was the son of Johannes and Valgerdur Gunnlaugson. He came to Canada in July of the year 1886 with his widowed mother, a brother Thorfinnur and his sister Helga. They had to leave their sister Kristbjorg (Martin) behind, because of ill health. She cametoo Canada five years later. They travelled by ship to Montreal, Que., then took the train to Winnipeg, Man. Jon worked at a livery stable the first year in Winnipeg. The following year they travelled by train to Cypress River, Man. Jon and his mother made their home with his uncle Brynjolfer Gunnlaugson, who then lived in the Bru districy. Jon worked as a farmhand for A. Esplin, one lof the first settlers of the Bru district. He also worked for G. Parry andfrom him learned to speak and read the English language well. He told of breaking a quarter section of land with a team of oxen and a hand plow for Mr. Walterson.
In 1905, he bought the SW 8-6-13 from Hallgrimur (Grimsey) Josephson. There were 40 acres broken at the time. He lived in a caboose while he built the first part of the house and granery. He moved a barn with the helpof his cousin Marteinn Martin. In 1909, hebuilt a larger barn and in later years added to the house. His sister Kristbjorg and husband Marteinn lived with him for a short time. Jon added the Breidal to his name (the name of the place he came from in Iceland) as there were two others with the same name and his mail was going to the wrong home.
Jon married Gudbjorg (Bertha) Bardarson (1888-1923) in July 1910, in Winnipeg, Man. Bertha was born in the R.M. of Argyle. She was the daughter of Sigmundur and Helga Bardarso. They had six children, two died in infancy.
