Oddi, a farm, church and parsonage. In Saga times the home of many of the foremost chieftains and scholars of Iceland. The well-known family line of Oddaverjar is from Oddi. Among them was Sæmundur Sigfússon the Learned (1056-1133), educated at the Sorbonne in Paris and considered by many to be the author of the elder EDDA. Statue of Sæmundur by Ásmundur Sveinsson erected there in 1998; replica of the one in front of the University of Reykjavík. Another outstanding man of his family was Jón Loftsson (1124-1197), who was the son of Þóra, daughter of Magnús "barefoot" Ólafssonar King of Norway. Snorri Sturluson, who was the author or the younger EDDA, HEIMSKRINGLA, the history of the Norwegian kings etc. and other works was brought up at Oddi by Jón Loftsson. Possibly Snorri got some of his information about the Norwegian royal families from his foster-mother þóra. The name EDDA is by some believed to be derived from the name Oddi. Six priests of Oddi later became bishops. Among the treasures in the church is a chalice from about 1300.
